The ending was supposed to make you ponder hope and sacrifice. I didn't really understand it the first time.
Anyway, it's a hack and slash game focused on epic presentation. Those are the things it screams. I don't really think it's intended to have an amazing story. The story is really just the action and journey you are going through, not the cutscenes.
